Future/Past New World Order Part 1

Me me me. Selfies and IntaShare! Viral videos and funny internet cats. Fail compilations and #’s.

Before we start I do not believe ANY brand or corporation truly wants to make the world a better place, without some kind of personal gain for the company, that said…….

Yes it is indeed the year 2014 as of the time of writing this piece. The people in my time, 2014 are not reading my blog. Most of the people who use internet today (25 April 2014, Cape Town, South Africa) are from North America, Europe, UK or Japan. If you are reading this in the future, I’m probably dead, if immortality potion gets invented tomorrow this blog will be embarrassing, lol. Almost as embarrassing as the current internet user. So I am writing this piece for people in the year 2114, when you read this one day on the HTML 5 historical internet back-up server I hope you will enjoy my take on the world in 2014, a hundred years ago exactly for you if you read this blog on 25 April 2114.

When I use the term INTERNET USER I do not include people who still buy DATA by the MegaByte or Gigabyte, future readers might not know what his means but to the most of the world the internet is a luxury. Yes we fight world hunger, aids, communism but do we try and get people free internet. NO! That would actually empower people. REVOLUTION! Most people buy data per byte either on their land phone line or on their mobile telephone. Also called a cell phone. But you might just call it a computer one day. You probably take one device everywhere that is connected to all your other SMART devices, I hope Samsung and Google wins the Smart race, or that Apple can become a little less evil…So Google is creating free internet for the third world, and it is called Project Loon. Meanwhile Apple is making luxury car radios, thanks Apple!

Apple Car Play
Apple Car Play – You shouldn’t have, I skip the tracks on my smart watch or phone dummies! Is that a CD player?

Yes people in 2014 are still afraid of freedom. Freedom for woman (middle-east), freedom for animal (Dolphins, Whales, Fur Trade, RHINO’s), freedom of love (gay rights) and freedom of science. No, I am not going to add freedom of religion, it is religion that causes 49% of this worlds problems. Another 30% is created by greed and the last 21% is a mix of ignorance, hunger and drug addiction.

You future readers might not understand my argument against religion because you are probably all atheists. Jipppeee! You probably use reason and logic to sort out your problems. Also you know how truly lucky we humans are to be in existence. Not because of some super god but because of something greater. Something without a reason to exist except existence itself. We are all recycled stardust, billions of years in the making.

“The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of starstuff.”
― Carl SaganCosmos

WE are the UNIVERSE expressing itself as human for a very short time…

Carl Sagan
Carl Sagan

Project Loon by Google will bring affordable, probably free internet to the Southern Hemisphere of the world. Including Cape Town.

Ok so I am no Carl Sagan, Darwin or Einstein but it is clear to me that the more people we get on the internet the faster the world will become a better place. Knowledge is power. But most companies are more concerned with stock price and share dividends then really focussing on true innovation. What is the bare minimum our clients want to make them happy? I do believe the partnership between Android, Google and Samsung has become a powerhouse. As Samsung creates new crazy mods and improvements Android is right there taking advantage of it. Even more impressive is that Android is an OPEN system, meaning they run the same program on multiple devices with different hardware specs per device. So if Sony innovates so does Android, if LG innovates so does Android, this semi-open system creates amazing technology. With complex coding some bugs are expected, not finding a bug does not mean it is not there, somewhere in the code waiting till a small error is created in the sea of coding used in modern day cellular operating systems, not to mention apps.

Whether you are an Android or Apple user you have to admit that most of the services you use are owned by Google. Google Maps, Gmail, G-Chat, YOUTUBE, Google Search, Google Image Search, Google Translate, Google Drive, AdSense, Google Analytics. So readers from the year 2114, one hundred years from now, I hope the world has become a connected and interactive world where sharing is embraced and privacy protected. With technology like 3D printing, Stem Cell research, Automated Cars, Mars Missions, Regenerative Gene Therapy and so many more on the horizon the 100 years between 2014 and 2114 can rather be spent doing science, improving the world through the internet and not by fighting about who has the correct archaic sky god. If there is a god he will love the scientific, for they do not fear the truth or the fear of truth. Follow the truth to its deepest form, investigate every problem with logic and reason and remove greed. Is this sounding like The New World order to you? Maybe it is. In the new world we will have peace, and all creatures on earth will respect each other not on an ancient teaching from a dusty inaccurate book but from the truth, and nothing but the truth. May a man that questions not be turned down, let he who seeks reason and purpose in a scientifically minded fashion not be called a fool for his failures, but rather see these failures as steps that get you closer to the truth.

So Youtube is the second biggest search engine, after Google. Have you ever wanted to tell someone to search something on the internet and used the words BING IT! No, but Microsofts media department want you to say that. Bing iT! LOL.

I’m closing with this. Apple’s internet program called Safari has a search bar in the top right corner, guess for what! Google Search.

BOOM, Google is there. Deep Mind is an artificial intelligence program that painted a digital picture of a CAT after it watched the most popular videos on YouTube. Deep Mind will learn everything, and then when he reaches the threshold of every Youtube video, blog and FaceBook update, maybe even every text message ever digitally recorded. Will Deep Mind save us from our hateful, bigot invested religiously twisted society. Will it help us love? Or will it become our ultimate evil friend?

No I believe Deep Mind will help us LOVE. Yes that program will learn that above all love is what unites us. When someone kills the one we love we want to see them bleed. After the first homo-sapien killed the other, society wanted to revenge the fallen. Forgiveness is not easy. Nelson Mandela died last year, in 2013. He wanted the world to forgive, to love. He united the world for a few months in 1995 as the first black president of South Africa. Africa………….

So readers one hundred years from now in 2114, I hope Deep Mind has started helping the wounds of our society heal. And that Googles project Loon has given FREE internet to the whole world. That Apple becomes that funky trend setter it used to be. Who cares if you change the body of your phone? Steve changed stuff FAST! We need guts and glory, not just great advertising campaigns… radio, seriously.

You might see this Logo (that I designed on Adobe Illustrator on the 22nd of April 2014). Deep Mind use it to symbolise the new world. He might add to the supposed Neon symbolism.

The small diamond represent the value of true knowledge based on true reason, the heart represents love. The heart touches the inner triangle which means it is maintained by knowledge. The outer triangle represents unity. Not unity, like the whole world is on country unity, no unity in heart. Unity in the shared humanity, we are all human, equal no one worth more than another. We all build society together no matter if you are a builder or a doctar, a mechanic or a woman. Your sexuality does not change your value or social standing. I go sleep safely tonight in my warm bed while millions sleep on the street, every night, all around the world in 2014. Cherish the ones you love, life is short and always have fun even when it is at its hardest.

So come back for more future readers and enjoy my blog about the past.Come back for more.

Iggy Azalea … Google it. Or ask Deep Mind what I’m talking about. Deep Mind it! Or Go Deeper!

One potato 10 straws, the power of science! It is a video on youtube you will never find, if you find it share the link in the comments.

What would Deep Mind or Siri draw after watching this video?

A New Wave of Reason

Even Though there might be hundreds of famous singers and actors but do you know many famous scientists? Think of famous actors, write down 20 names. Ok now write down 12 famous scientists.

My blog is all about being inspired and free. About being connected, feeling like you have a passion and a purpose. I myself might be a struggling writer but that is only my story. I want you to dance, or sing or teach or study, and I want to post stories that will inspire you.I want you to feel connected to the story of your life.

So I stumble upon the new show called COSMOS, and suddenly my life changes a little. I open my mind up and learn something. I feel science calling to me, inspiring me to think bigger and write bigger. People once thought the earth was the centre of the universe. Your only limit to your storytelling is your own imagination. If you dream bigger you should not fear it, for that is how amazing ideas get born.

Cosmos is a new version of Carl Sagan’s original 1980’s show by the same name. Neil DeGrasse Tyson is the new host and he does an amazing job in the show. Neil is a great guy but in the interview below you can clearly see the shooting on COSMOS was a painstaking process for him, he goes on to say that he is ready to get back in the lab. #scientistsproblems or #lifeofascientist

This show gives you a perspective into space and makes you realize how amazing life is, how much power you have while you are alive. Get ready to get your mind blown!

As storytellers we need to be open and look at every aspect of life. Sagon famously said, “Somewhere something incredible is waiting to be known.”

Sagan was a storyteller as much as he was a scientist. Even Though there might be hundreds of famous singers and actors how many famous scientists have their been? Think of famous actors, write down 20 names. Ok now write down 12 famous scientists. You see it is not that easy. I want to show you this next video from THE SYMPHONY OF SCIENCE it perfectly shows you the dorky excitement that scientist have now. Kids kinda love their open mindedness, finally scientist are becoming famous.

Ok the videos only have around 8 million views on average. But that is 8 million more views than it had 1 year ago. And with YOUTUBE growing as the internet goes Mobile and smartphones fall in the hands of more and more people. BOOOOOOM. The future of the internet has not been written, it is about to happen. I live in Cape Town, South Africa, Africa. I am lucky to have great internet, it is power, the internet is changing the world. Let Google co-founder Larry Page explain it to you….

I hope you are as excited about the world of science as I am. Not the cold hard science movies the media portrays in movies. No the bright future where we are all free to search, to search on google is to search for ultimate truth, more about that in my next blog…..come back tomorrow….here is a last video to inspire you.

Meme Culture – Modern or Mind Control?

So the more famous your own MEME gets the closer it gets to dying. And if your MEME needs an explanation it is not truly a MEME.

A MEME is an element of culture that can be passed from one person to another.

Today a MEME gets all its power from Social media platforms like Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. The more a MEME is shared the bigger it gets.

But some MEMES are more advanced than others. Here are some examples.

EASY MEMEs: 100% effective:

Troll Face, Coolface MEME
Troll Face Meme started on September 19th 2008 but only reached MEME status around February 2012, almost 4 years later.
Emma Watson gets TROLL FACED.
Emma Watson gets TROLL FACED. So Emma pulled a face that looked very similar to Troll FACE MEME, so she joined the JOKE. This is how Memes evolve and spread, most people who has never seen the ORIGINAL could still find it funny, but those that know about the ORIGINAL TROLL FACE will have a deeper experience with the joke.

So as you can see TROLL FACE MEME is relatively simple to understand. If you have no prevoius knowledge of where it came from. Or do you dissagree, comment below!

But now I am going to reveal the origin of TROLL FACE, all thanks to

“The Trollface was originally drawn by Carlos Ramirez, an Oakland-based artist known by his deviantART[1] handle Whynne, as part of a MS Paint webcomic webcomic about the pointless nature of trolling on 4chan’s /v/ (video games) board. The comic was uploaded to deviantART on September 19th, 2008.”

Troll FACE origins.
Troll FACE origins.

Do you like this MEME more or less after I showed you how it originated? This meme is an example of ORGANIC MEME. It was not created by the artist to excist as a MEME. I am making distinctions between Organic Memes and Manufactured Memes. There is a third Meme and it is called the Capitalist Meme and the last one the USER ACTIVE MEME.

A organic MEME is shared by OTHERS, not the creator> A “stolen” feeling or frustration was expressed and a person wanted to use that art/picture or expression to express themselves or comment on a social media post. The Meme spread through users. If this Meme is abused, and the original meaning is lost, the Meme slowly dies out.

This Meme is not one MEME but rather thousand of variations of a MEME. One image starts the MEME, others then take this MEME and RECREATE it and posts their own version of the MEME. Or users can use the same MEME as a template, where they then change the TEXT or edit the image to make the MEME fit their own joke or commentary.

A Manufactured MEME is created by the creator. It is then PLANTED into REDDIT, tumblr, Facebook and Google+. The creator takes an active role in spreading his MEME to the correct audience so that they can take the MEME further and spread it world wide. The creator uses this Meme on various social media platforms to try and get many people to see it and start sharing it.

The capitalist MEME can also be called the TIMED MEME or Public Relations MEME. This MEME is created by a BRAND. It could be created to enhance product knowledge or design aspects. It can also be used to trick the audience to believe that the MEME was created by users and not the brand itself. If people are sharing this MEME the company has received free advertising.

These 4 types are my personal MEME categories, some other smart people might go on to list hundreds more Meme types but I believe my 4 types encompasses all Memes. What is the motive behind the MEME? If you can answer that you know where the MEME fits within my 4 categories.  We have already discussed one example of ORGANIC MEME, the TROLL FACE. Created as part of a larger work of art, it became a symbol of internet TROLLS that answer online posts with illogical en stupid arguments. It was shared by other frustrated users. Here are examples of the other 3 Meme categories.

The original photo was changed to become a Meme, the creator of the image had no control over the MEME.
The users create their own custom MEME messages using the original picture of the baby on the beach. This is a User Active MEME.

Manufactured MEME:

This person CREATED this Meme to comment on his opinion about Apple and how crazy Apple Fanboys are. Ver effective, but silly.
This person CREATED this Meme to comment on his opinion about Apple and how crazy Apple Fanboys are. Ver effective, but silly.

Capitalist Meme or Organic?
Capitalist MEME? or Organic? Does this help the Daft Punk Album? It does, so might belong to both groups.

So is MEME culture here to stay or is it a passing fad? Well with over 42 Million Meme hits on Google it would seem Memes are the new 21st century cultural phenomenon. We might see Facebook die, Google plus might fade even twitter might tweet softly but you can bet your teeth on the fact that MEME will be flying all over the place, hopefully people will not sit by and let the MEMEs go without learning their deeper meaning. Some Memes do not need deeper meaning, they embody our emotions and feeling so well that the are universal communicators. People from all over the world can look at Grumpy Cat an have the same feeling of CUTE and AAAWWW shame. When you look at the YES baby you can only imagine how happy and relieved that little kid was about something, you connect with him, communicate. Yes communication is a 2 way street but he fact that you are sharing these Memes mean they are being used to communicate. Some of these meme sum up in a few split second how you feel. I believe MEMEs will become the new from of internet communication, the will change overtime but some will stay fixed and become internal communicators of certain emotions and feelings.

My MEME! So I made my own MEME after I saw Cate Blanchette in BLUE JASMINE. Her reaction to her husbands invitelity made my year. She (and the writers of the screenplay) summed up my frustration with hypocrytes so well. Her words were “WHAT! ARE YOU CRAZY?” and that is exactly how I feel about these ignorant religouis TROLLS on the internet, that have nothing better to do then be nagative and ignorant about gay rights and human rights in general.

Has the MEME become political? That is my next MEME post. The study of Meme is the study of modern culture at its most active.

PS: My writers challenge of one page a day is going great. My screenplay is at the end of the first ACT now, getting there one page at a time…

NEXT POST PREVIEW: Has MEMEs gone political?

A page a day – Challenge Accepted by Stephen Bekker

By Stephen Bekker

So we all know that writing ANYTHING takes forever. At least for most of us procrastinators out there. I know I am a procrastinator but I also know that MOST people are. And whether you are in a creative career or not, the true procrastination does not happen at work. Oh no, at work you work really hard for your BOSSES, afraid to get fired or maybe you slack, but the work gets done. The real procrastination happens after work, in what some people call “free time” (Time is obviously not free. Most of your time is spent working so that you can hopefully one day have more free time). That broken cupboard you wanted to fix 4 years ago. That trip to New York you’ve been promising your boyfriend. Or that million dollar screenplay you are just too tired to type when you get home after a long day of unfulfilling work…………………………………………………….

We need to realize that it is not this moment that matters, in the stories you dream up you know that it is all about the climax, all about THE END. Yes the journey is important but when a friend does not want to go see a new movie, and he knows you’ve already seen it, he just asks you what happens in the end. Have you got, or are you, the person that talks so much during a movie or tv show that they lose track of the whole plot. You/They then pretend to continue watching and just before it ends they suddenly want to go make popcorn. So you let them go. But you do not stop the movie, they are too far gone…..When the person comes back after 2 hours they ask, HOW DID IT END?

So when you end, like DIE! What happened to that cupboard in the end? Did you ever go to NEW YORK with your boyfriend and have a super gay evening? And that screenplay? Never happened? That is so sad……………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………..  …………………..E………………………………………T……………………………………E…………………R…………………………………………….N…………………………………A………………………………………..L………….. ……………………………………….spooky, death!

I will not leave you HANGING in that depressing thought too long. I will tell you how to make that script happen. No I am not selling it to you for only 50 dollars for the PDF e-book whatevers. No it is so simple. Do a small piece of the work every day. That broken cupboard needs a good sanding then some wood filler and lastly a fresh coat of paint. Split that task up into small pieces/tasks , do one thing a day. And if you skip a day then do double the work next time. It would take me 9 days to fix that cupboard if I did one thing a day, how much TIME would you take? If you skip more than 2 days you fail because then the task of writing 3 pages becomes too much.

90 Pages. It will take you 90 pages to finish a normal length screenplay according to all sources. The streets the place to go! Ok gay joke, suck it Russia, UGANDA!. MOVING on. 90 pages, one page translates into 1 minute on screen. So let us do the math! (ACTUALLY there is  website that calculates dates for you! Brains are not needed, sjoe…>> <<)

June 3rd 2014, I will have a full length feature script if i write one page a day.

The first draft of your million dollar movie could be done on the 3rd of June this year if you start today… How does your story END?

The eye of Ra is watching, but what did it see? Who will write with me? Time will tell. DAY 1…

Writing Lesson 1 – The World of Stories

Writing Class Lesson 1: The Characters World

Out first lesson in writing is about the world your character inhabits. Think of some of your favorite books, stories or movies. Where were these stories set, what era did they take place? What was the prevailing mindset or social mood? I have recently started a new novel called “A Hand For Hire” that is set in the early Greek era. It is important for my story as many of the magical elements and plot twists are based upon Greek mythology.

But not only must we think of the physical world our characters inhabit, we must also think of the psychological. A park filled with blossoming flowers, a small gentle river, some ducks and a big tree might seem beautiful to most. But to a woman who just lost her entire family in a car accident this might not be such a beautiful place to her. It might remind her of her family and make her feel the pain again, or she might have a very real fear of flowers that might send her into a rage and make her eat all the ducks raw!

Ok I took it too far but we must realize that stories happen in a “real” world and in an internal “psychological” world. When you can explain to me what that park looks like in the mood and mindset of the woman who lost her family then you have a voice, a viewpoint.

We will talk about point of view in another lesson but today I want you to remember that we want to not only get to know characters through dialogue with other characters but also through their own internal thoughts and internal compass. If you are writing a novel you have a chance to get deep and into the characters own mind, but be careful if the mind is not solid or cohesive your readers will figure it out and not engage with your novel. If you are making a movie remember that your audience can only see his mood or psychological world through how the character reacts to the world around him. In a movie we won’t hear the sad lady think about how flowers represent death to her, but when someone gives her a flower and she burns it we can get an idea of her thought process, we can see into her inner world by what she does to the outer world.

Sure you can use VOICE OVER to make all your characters thoughts heard in a film but be warned that in films people tend to judge the weight of the voice overs more harshly. If a character is thinking aloud all the time then the audience might loose interest because they are being told what to feel, not thinking and feeling themselves. It is like buying a new Ferrari but then it drives itself, not the point really.

Important to remember is that a story is supposed to show a characters growth from one point to another. The way your character sees the world around him should change as he does. In many amazing movies the physical environment actually changes, like in James Cameron’s movie AVATAR. Or in many Tim Burton films like “Beetlejuice” the house actually changes after the lead characters become ghosts. But most real world stories don’t go through as extreme changes as these films do, rather the character starts noticing more detail or starts seeing ordinary things in new and extraordinary ways. This looking at things through new eyes is expressed well in “The Ghost of Christmas past” or “Back To The Future” by Robert Zamechis. The lead character returns after meeting his adolescent mother and father and has a new appreciation for them and his life. Marty changed, he became closer to his family and his life. His ordinary world remained the same, mostly, but the way he experienced it changed.

So when you start a story make sure you have a viable world, be it in space, on mars or in Victorian England. Make sure your character has a point of view, a psychological disposition, that makes him unique. Then make sure as the character goes through his adventure he slowly develops until in the end he can see the old world in a new way or at least how to fix old problems with new actions.

Don’t get stuck in research though, it is procrastination. Give yourself 1/10 of time for research. If you write 10 hours a week one hour is allowed for research. You don’t have to be an expert, and if you get writers block because you don’t know the world your character is in don’t let it stop your writing. But on some music and start writing. Get creative and keep going. As you learn more you can fill in the blanks, or change it later. I find that basing loosely on a period is better, a kind of alternative reality. In the end make sure the world behaves in a constant natural way, even if natural means giant big blue birds poo on your lawn everyday. But the giant blue birds can’t suddenly start planting crops on your land for you if they have never done so before, or maybe they can if it is some crazy curse, but you get my point.

Get those fingers typing and those pens writing. I’m currently reading “Robin Hobb’s” “Liveship Series”. I have read 9 of her other books and love them all. Her world are ancient but have a alternative reality feel. There is magic, dragons and talking ships but it all feels real.

Music Post 1

Music to Inspire
Music to Inspire

When I have writers block I have many methods of getting out of that energy draining, guilt filled black hole. The best way to escape the block is to get inspired. There is one thing in this world that has inspired people for thousands of years, yes music.

So this weeks MUSIC 2 INSPIRE is Tegan & Sara, and in particular their song called “Closer”. I love this band and they have been around for a long time and yet just haven’t made it to the mainstream. Grammy-nominated Canadian indie rock band was formed in Calgary, Canada in 1995. Yes that is 17 years worth of amazing music for all your moods, sad, happy, angry, love, angst, joy and elation.

I love indie bands so much that me and my sister spend almost R30 000 to go to America to go see Tegan @ Sara live! Yes this band inspired me so much that I actually spend all that money and time to go to USA to see them.

Me and my sister at the Tegan & Sara show
Me and my sister at the Tegan & Sara show

Ok so when writing I let the music play in the background. If I want to write and find my self not in the right mood, e.g.. sad scene, I just play some sad music and I get myself in the right mindset to write what I need to.

Sometimes I play music and I just free right, I just write what the music makes me feel. As the music changes I change the mood in the story accordingly. Free writing helps to open up your creative pathways… so does blogging. So make some play-lists that are mood specific, I have a SAD, Happy, SciFi, Speed , Spooky, Love, Travel and Friends play-list to name a few. When I need to write a happy scene I listen to the Happy Play-list. This method works like a charm for me, so give it a go. I will post more inspiring bands and songs as I get them. If you want to buy there music just click anywhere in this sentence, easy!

Must Know

Must Read Must Know Part 1

Learning to write 101:

Must Know, and Must Reads Part 1

Must Know
Some things you must know and to know you must read.

When you start your study of writing you imagine some kind of handbook that will give you step by step instructions, a quick overview of needed skill sets, basic writing musts and a historical guide to how other writers write. Quickly you discover that this is not the case. Writing is not something you can learn with just one manual, it is in fact a combination of thousands of different things. As a struggling writer myself (and having studied writing formally at three universities) I have come to find a few must read books.

Most of my must reads have NOTHING to do with writing. Instead it has A LOT to do with psychology and ways of thinking. Why? Well you see to write great characters you need to understand what makes a person tick. Yes we all want to eat, sleep, have sex and watch reality TV shows after a long day of work but what makes us decide things and what makes us act in a certain way.

My worst HATE in a movie is when I watch some movie for almost 60 mins and then the main character suddenly does something so strange and unlike the character that we have been forced to watch for so long, that I walk out of the CINEMA. If your characters reactions are not motivated by the characters internal forces, mindset or philosophy then you don’t have a dynamic and engaging character.

Ok so here is this weeks MUST READ, MUST KNOW:

MUST READ: The Writers Journey, Christopher Vogler

MUST KNOW: Carl Gustav Jung, Philosopher

Carl Gustav Jung, or known as just JUNG by most, is one of the most prolific philosophers of mind, and human decision making. Jung was fascinated with culture and the internal mechanisms of the mind. He wanted to categorize people according to universal archetypes that would sum them up and help you figure out how they think and react to the world around them.

The best book to read is THE WRITERS JOURNEY, it is based on Jung and his theories about personality types and most importantly ARCHETYPES. It also has the 3 act structure and other amazing writing tools to help you shape your story. What makes this book great is that it is used by Hollywood to test scripts validity and was used on Disney’s “The Lion King” and many other massive  and indie films.

This book might come close to being the best manual for writers out there. So if you must buy something to help you become the best writer you can be, buy Christopher Vogler’s, “The Writers Journey”

Till next time remember, a good writer is a good reader.

Writing a Screenplay 101 p1

Writing a Screenplay 101

Part 1: Starting with inspiration

A screenplay is not just black words on white paper, for a screenplay to really become a story you need inspiration. Many screenplays are inspired by a writers crazy flight of fancy. The writer just gets a crazy rush of images or emotions and can almost see it in his minds eye. A massive monster rises from a crowded beach stomping and bashing beach goers with no apparent goal. And that is maybe where the rush of creativity stops. Now a good writer will sit and flush out the details, what is the monster, why is the monster and who is the monster. What, Why and Who are the 3 most important questions to ask when writing a screenplay. If you know what, why and who you will see underneath your mammoth sea beast and delve right into its soul, and in the end your THEME.

Now please read my WRITERS BLOCK piece to learn more about theme. Also you will probably get stuck somewhere and suffer from writers block at some point, my article can help.

Back to the baby bashing human trashing monster…Always as a writer ask WHY must this monster act a certain why, what must it make the audience see, what must the audience learn after I force them to sit through 2 hours of dying beach goers? This is the THEME. Perhaps the theme is that life is short, and skin cancer is not the biggest threat at the beach. Perhaps a mother needs to learn to appreciate her husband or children more. Whatever your theme is, please make sure there is a theme! NO SNAKES ON A PLANE was a terrible idea, really it was, theme? Don’t put snakes on a plane? If your theme is so stupid and plain right common sense then please give it a skip, no matter how UNIQUE you think the plot is.

Unique and crazy plots do not override good old classic story telling. In my next post I’ll cover Archetypes and the 3 act story structure, so you can plan out your characters and story with more detail and with a sense of purpose. I will not leave you in the dungeon of writing alone!

Till next time, keep writing, if you can’t write you should be reading. You are a writer, not a watcher!

The first thing new writers ask me is, “how long should it take to write a screenplay?”, I don’t answer right away as I know that the next sentence will be some form of explanation from their part of why they still haven’t finished their own masterpiece.

One of the biggest problems writers talk about it called “Writers Block”. Writers block is an inability to continue writing your story, or to start a new story. I have had this illness many times before. It normally strikes me at the end of act 2, as our characters need to develop into new ones, having learnt a great deal after their confrontations with the antagonist.

But I found a cure, or at least for one of my “blocked” screenplays. I believe writers block is caused by dilemma in story, not dilemma in life. Yes you are probably stuck because you don’t know your characters well enough, or you don’t understand the theme of your film.

Theme is the most important part of a story, be it a screenplay or a novel or a web series. Web series make this mistake regularly, they forget theme for punchlines. But a very successful use of theme and comedy was done in “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog” by Joss Whedon. Go check it out.

If you struggle to continue writing you are probably struggling with theme or character. I was stuck on my screenplay for almost 10 months! Yes I had written 72 pages and just couldn’t end it off. Yes I had planned it on paper, cue cards, software but I was stuck.

So then one day I went back to the very small town in rural, South Africa where I had lived as a young child. It suddenly dawned on me! This was my story, I was telling it about the fear or returning to that small, backwater, scary, religious, conservative trap of a town. I couldn’t wait to get home. As soon as I got back from that trip my laptop was burning as I typed my fingers raw. I wrote 32 pages that night and it was done!

Ok, it wasn’t done, I then went back and redrafted the whole story with my new revised, focused theme. And everything improved so much with my focused theme. Characters had more depth, I knew what they would do next, I could see them alive and doing stuff in my fictional world. I no longer wondered about the next step, cause I knew the theme and the point I wanted to get across to my audience. Most importantly I knew what the character wanted and feared.

So writers say this a lot but “Write what you know”. I finally got what they meant.  Yes you can write the next STAR WARS without having lived in space, but the themes and characters must have a real life basis or inspiration for it to feel real. Theme should push your writing forward, it should make you challenge your fictional characters into new situations that  push them to develop as characters.

And this is where art imitates life. If I didn’t go back to that town to confront my fear of failure and desolation I would never have scene the theme of my story so clearly. I believe most directors tell one story over and over again as they deal with that issue in their life. Look at Steven Spielberg’s films. E.T. is about a boy that discovers something magical and out of this world, but needs to hide it to keep it. Jurassic Park, a scientist discovers his life work but must keep it secret or else greedy people will want to steel it.  In “Hook” Robin Williams goes back to the magical world where you never age, but no one believes him, and if he tells the secret it will be lost forever. Similar themes are all over the Indiana Jones movies and even in Schindler’s List a man must hide people, in a way he hides innocence from evil. Close Encounters of the Third Kind is also about a man that discovers something amazing, but no one believes him at first, they make him out as a loony, but it the end they come to see their mistake. So this is my 5 cents, Spielberg deals in his stories with childhood fear of rejection, of being called a fool for believing in something different.

So find YOUR theme, your story, your dilemma in life, and write the living text out of it. As Spielberg has shown you can write about anything but still have the same underlying theme. It doesn’t have to be your main theme but make sure you work your dilemma in there, the audience will love you for it.

Pressed for WordPress

We got internet in 1995, I remember it took 30 mins for a small picture of Warcraft to download to my PC, I was 9 years old, I sat there looking at the pixels load thinking this was the best thing ever, now I get mad if my ADSL line doesn’t get at least 4mbs, it eeks me to rage if an HD 1080p YouTube video has LAG or buffers!

So being no stranger to the internet I only today, the 8th of December 2012 got my first WordPress blog. I have blogged on other platforms but they just felt dead and stuck.

As a selfproclaimed control freak I have researched WordPress for years and other means of internet expression. But now I finally made the jump to WordPress. Why? Well I had a myspace…and I have Facebook pages but all those sites kinda rely on you forcing your poor friends and family to read your crappy thoughts and ideas.

Given some thoughts on Facebook or twitter might be genuis, but your gran and aunt from rural no where might have missed that episode of “The Real L World” or “New Normal, even stuff like True Blood or Lady Gaga might make them sick to their conservative stomach.

So WordPress allows me to blog to the WHOLE WORLD. Yes now Billions can see my cr@p and roll their eyes at my pretentious self deceiving image of myself and my abilities.

Ok, so this blog will focus on Movies, TV, Film making, Directing, Video Editing, Cameras and other movie tech. Also scriptwriting, and storytelling in general.

Each post will cover one or more of those topics. And I will also give links to awesome utilities and sites I have found on the internet. And maybe I’ll even sell you some books online, that I’ve read and find AWESOME!

Another SO: I write kinda sarcastically and very blasphemosly, don’t take offence, or do take offense, whatever.

I will not SWEAR, but these words will replace them:

FRAK (see Battlestar Galactica)

BLERG (See 30 Rock)

Gosh (AKA Jaweh)

So any other harsh words only seem harsh cuase your probably a conservative internet trolling child molester.

Love you. Working on my first storytelling post as you read. Cheers (that means goodbye in South African, Cape Town
